Chronic Ear Infections

Young children are particularly prone to middle-ear infections because their Eustachian tubes—the small passages that allow the middle ears to ventilate and drain toward the back of the throat—are shorter, narrower, and positioned more horizontally than they are in adults. This anatomy can make natural drainage less efficient, especially when inflammation or congestion is present.

Chiropractic care does not treat the infection itself. Our interest is in the mechanics surrounding normal drainage. The upper cervical spine sits in close anatomical relationship to the muscles and soft tissues of the head and neck, and restriction or tension in this region may influence normal movement and function. Gentle chiropractic care can be used to improve upper-cervical mobility and address mechanical restrictions, with the goal of supporting normal function and the body’s natural drainage mechanisms. In our office, we’ve seen many children with recurrent ear problems experience fewer episodes while under chiropractic care, although individual results vary and chiropractic care should not be considered a treatment for the infection itself. Children with suspected ear infections should still be appropriately evaluated by their pediatric healthcare provider.
